Seven #WeddingDetox Tips That Don't Include Juicing
By Kayley George, RDN, LD
There’s nothing more synonymous than weddings and detoxes. As soon as a ring slides on your finger, brides-to-be find themselves magnetically drawn to all the cleanses. Before taking the plunge and dropping serious cash on a juice cleanse or detox product, let’s take a step back and look at what a detox really is.
Detoxification is a process that ushers out molecules, both good and bad, from the body. These “toxins” come from processes that your body carries out everyday--think of it as self cleaning—as well as outside sources like air pollution, chemicals in smoke and parabens from lotions and cosmetics.
Here’s the bottom line : most of the detoxes out on the market are going to do more harm than good. Ironically, most detoxes cut out essential nutrients needed to give your liver and gut the boosts they need to clear out your pathways. Your body is an incredible machine that can do major detox on its own, all you need to do is love and support it.
If you’re ready to jumpstart your bridal glow, here are seven ways to get your aisle-ready body (and none of them include juicing!):
Guzzle One Gallon of Water Daily
This may sound terrifying, but water is your body’s way of flushing out the good and the bad. Add some lemon or fresh herbs to keep yourself hydrated and happy.
Cut Out All Added Sugars
Let me be clear: Removing “added sugars” is not the same as removing “all sugars”. Your nutrition label will differentiate an added sugar and a natural sugar source (think fruit, honey, dairy).
Add 5-9 Servings of Veggies to Your Diet
Veggies are the foundation of a successful detox strategy. Not only are they fibrous and filling, they are loaded with vitamins and minerals that support phase one and phase two of your liver’s detox systems.
Consumer >30g of Fiber Daily
The fatal flaw of a juice cleanse is the lack of fiber. To successfully bind and remove toxins from the body, they must be pushed out through the gut’s excretion pathways. Extra fibrous roughage, like artichokes, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, nuts, and seeds keep everything in the gut moving along smoothly!
Pick High Quality Proteins
Glutathione is a protein sometimes referred to as “master antioxidant” of the human body. While your body can produce glutathione naturally, the bad news is that poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation all deplete your glutathione. In addition to cruciferous veggies, animal protein and quality whey sources can boost your body’s glutathione levels
Opt for Naturally Fermented Foods
Remember those weird foods that your grandma canned in her kitchen? She was onto something. Fermented foods like kefir, yogurt, kimchi and sauerkraut are rich in probiotics. These foods will help the body manage toxins from microbes that live in the gut.
Find Time for a Sweat Session
Grab your bridesmaids and block off some time to get sweaty! Whether you want to hop in a sauna, experiment with hot yoga, or just get sweaty at the gym, your pores will step-up as an alternative detoxification pathway.
Depending on the timeline for your big day, consider following a natural detox cleanse for 2-4 weeks starting anywhere from three to six months before you walk down the aisle. Crash detoxing will only put more stress on your body as the “I Do”s get closer. And, really, who needs that when they are planning a wedding?
