Healthy Eating on a Bridal Budget

By Kayley George, RDN, LD

The common misconception that eating healthy has to be expensive can be daunting when you are about to put money into a wedding. It can be easy to think that buying nutritious alternatives will empty out your bank account before the big day, but is that actually true? Here are five tips and tricks to purchasing healthy options while sticking within your bridal budget:

1.     Don’t feel the need to shop at the health food stores. While they can be fun and offer great options, they tend to be quite expensive compared to a normal grocery store. A good way to save money for wedding season is to buy healthy produce and snacks that are not marked up for their brand name.

2.     Plan your meals before shopping. This will keep you from buying food you won’t eat and help you to cut back on impulse buying. Not only will this save your bank account, but it will also help you to eat healthy in preparation for the big day.

3.     Don’t shop when you’re hungry! This will lead to buying more than you need and also will likely increase purchasing of less nutritious options. Another way to save your money and improve health!

4.     Buy produce that is in season. Produce that is out of season tends to be more expensive than produce in season.

5.     Try to limit from the “healthy” snacks that can tend to be expensive and unnecessary when you can get your nutrients from whole foods. Some protein bars and bottled salad dressings can have added sugars and other unhealthy ingredients despite being labeled as healthy. It can be tempting to buy the quick fat loss or the magic detox foods that will break the bank, but if you resist those, your bank account  will thank you!
